The New SOC Career Ladder: How AI is Reshaping the SecOps Workforce

Ask security operations leaders and practitioners how AI integration is going, and the initial consensus is overwhelmingly positive. In fact, 88% of respondents report that AI has made their work more satisfying, while 47% say it has expanded their capacity to handle security activity. After years of promises about relief from the alert queue, the data suggests relief is finally arriving.

Beneath these encouraging headline numbers lies a far more complex reality for the future of cybersecurity talent. Swimlane surveyed 500 security operations professionals and leaders across the U.S. and U.K. to examine how AI is fundamentally reordering the analyst’s day, changing skill development, and shifting the SOC career ladder.

AI is making security work better

Here is a preview of what the report reveals:

  • Repetitive Investigations Offer the Clearest Relief: 43% of respondents save time on known or repetitive threat patterns. Time saved on routine casework is being redirected toward investigating complex threats (35%), strategic cross-functional work (35%), and validating AI-generated findings (34%).
  • Human Judgment Still Sets the Boundary: Security professionals maintain clear limits on AI authority. 48% prioritize their own judgment when AI recommendations conflict with available evidence or risk disrupting critical business operations.
  • Overreliance is the Leading Risk: 19% of respondents cite analyst overreliance* on AI-generated recommendations as the single greatest risk of expanding AI in SecOps… outranking data privacy and adversarial manipulation.
  • Satisfaction vs. Skill Growth: Nearly 1 in 4 respondents (24%) say AI has limited their skill development. Surprisingly, 91% of that same group still report higher job satisfaction. This highlights why employee sentiment alone cannot serve as a proxy for long-term capability.

Is Your SecOps Team Prepared for the Shift?

AI is changing the nature of security work faster than many organizations are rebuilding the path to expertise. As AI-driven automated triage absorbs traditional Tier-1 tasks—like basic alert verification, IP reputation checks, and initial log parsing—the historical “training ground” for junior analysts is rapidly disappearing. Without these foundational entry-level responsibilities, SecOps teams face a critical dilemma: how do you develop senior analysts when the entry-level stepping stones no longer exist?

To prevent a widening skills gap, security leaders must proactively rethink workforce development and mentorship models.

“The New SOC Career Ladder” Report highlights these divides.
