A Day In the Life with Sr. Security Solutions Architect, Josh Rickard

3 Minute Read

Welcome to the “Day in the Life” blog series. Here we will feature interviews with Swimlaners to learn more about their experience. This series will give you a preview of Swimlane, our culture, and the people who keep us going.

How long have you been with Swimlane?

I have been at Swimlane since December of 2018; almost 3 ½ years and I have loved every minute of it!

What does your job entail?

That’s a difficult question to answer but I will try my best. I am on the DeepDive team here at Swimlane and we focus on creating content for our customers. This includes use cases, internal and external (open-source) tools, creating plugins, blogs, talking with media, and much more. We also focus on the “what’s possible” when it comes to security automation which often focuses on new functionality and features within the Swimlane platform.

What do you enjoy most about working at Swimlane?

If I had to choose one thing it is the focus (and encouragement by everyone at Swimlane) on creativity. Creativity in the sense of taking an idea, experimenting, and seeing how those ideas impact others is truly awesome. But then you see all of these amazingly smart people in the Swimlane ecosystem (our customers, partners, and all of our employees) take these ideas, implement them and improve them even further than you had imagined. Seeing how they use Swimlane, including the content we create, is truly inspiring on many levels.

What excites you most about your work?

What most excites me is the fact that I can see how my work impacts our customers and the broader Information Security community. Creating and implementing different ways automation can be applied in the real world, and seeing our customers use those ideas to defend themselves is humbling. Additionally, seeing the open-source tools I develop being used in production systems to help defend organizations is amazingly cool.

What do you like to do when you aren’t working?

Honestly, I like to work but usually on side projects or learning a new programming language or building a new skill. Besides that, I love to spend time with my family.

What’s a fun fact about you many people may not know?

After high school, I tried college but it wasn’t for me at the time. I worked a few jobs for about 10 years before getting my degree in Computer Information Systems and then started working in IT. The rest is history.

Your motto or personal mantra:

Let’s Automate It (hence https://letsautomate.it/)

Three words that best describe you:

Creative, driven, defender

What Swimlane core value resonates with you the most?

Be a happy innovator. I love solving problems and building tools along the way to help either myself or someone else in the future. The reason I love solving problems is that I can take a problem and solve it in a new creative way. Many of the open-source tools I have released came from a problem I was trying to solve so I wanted to give back to the community.
