Get the SANS Closing the Critical Skills Gap for Modern and Effective SOCs Survey.

The global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic means that any forward-looking projections include a large “cone of uncertainty.” The SANS Closing the Critical Skills Gap for Modern and Effective Security Operations Centers (SOCS) survey results reflect this uncertainty.

One of the main themes of the survey was uncertainty around cybersecurity hiring. The report found that overall 34% of respondents reported they would be adding security staff in 2020. However, a strikingly high percentage (40%) expressed uncertainty as to whether they would be expanding their security workforce. Data captured for this survey effectively started the week of March 9, 2020. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the pandemic on March 11, 2020. Therefore, the results reflect security managers facing economic uncertainty while simultaneously dealing with changing security demands due to a rapid transition of their organizations to nearly a 100% work-from-home environment, including the security team.
